Tombolo: Shopify Plus Theme Migration

Challenge

Tombolo is a New York apparel brand known for its bold, print-led "escapewear," and one of our largest and most repeat clients. They came to us on the ageing Showcase theme and wanted to move to a new theme without losing any of the bespoke functionality that had accumulated over years of trading on Shopify Plus. A migration of this kind is deceptively risky: theme swaps can quietly break checkout scripts, currency tools, size charts, and inventory logic, and Tombolo runs a high-traffic store where any downtime is expensive.

Solution

We researched and presented different theme options with pros and cons, and agreed to move them over to Broadcast. We then planned and executed the full migration on a draft theme, methodically re-testing every dependent system - Shopify Scripts and their scheduled move to Shopify Functions, checkout extensibility, the multi-currency converter, and their per-product size chart architecture - before going anywhere near the live store. Alongside the migration we designed and built a custom product badge system: an editorially controlled set of corner badges powered by metafields and kept in sync automatically with Shopify Flow, so that states like "sold out at a given location" update themselves as inventory changes rather than needing manual maintenance.

We also fixed key accessibility issues surfaced by a large-scale accessibility audit across all 938 pages of the store, and traced what looked like a sprawling problem - 14,099 empty-heading errors - back to a single third-party script embed. One targeted fix eliminated the issue entirely, cutting the site's total error count by roughly 77% in one pass.

Outcome

The result was a clean move to a modern, faster theme with none of Tombolo's hard-won functionality lost, plus a badge system their team can control themselves and an accessibility posture materially stronger than where they started. The engagement has continued into ongoing conversion analysis and maintenance - a sophisticated Plus brand choosing to keep us on for additional work.
